 Buying and Caring for Your Christmas Tree:

  • When shopping for your tree (fir and pine are the best) you want to be sure you're buying a live one. All Wolff's trees are live and fresh cut locally. Other places may sell trees that have been dyed at the farm before they are cut and only give the appearance of being fresh.
  • Pulling and bending needles, bouncing the butt of the tree on the ground to see if needles fall off, or snapping small branches are not always good ways to tell if the tree is fresh. And, in most cases, these practices can destroy the appearance of the tree for others who may visit the lot after you
  •  **If you do nothing else: as soon as you get home from your shopping trip, use a saw to make a fresh cut through the base of the trunk, an inch or so from the bottom.  Then submerge the trunk into a bucket of BOILING water. This exposes a fresh surface and opens up the pores so that the preserving mixture or water will be better absorbed by the tree. Keep the solution level well above the base of the cut at all times. If the cut base dries out, the sap will harden and the tree will not take up any more water.**
  •  If you choose to make the preserving mixture: take a 2 gallon pail and fill it with six quarts of boiling water. Add one pint clear Karo syrup (or 2 cups sugar-water), 2 ounces of liquid chlorine bleach, and Wolff's Epsom salt and borax mix (a pinch of Epsom salt and 1/2 teaspoon of borax.)  Using this solution helps because fresh-cut trees absorb corn syrup or sugar and use it as an energy source, instead of using and converting stored sugars; therefore they have more energy for staying fresh. Mix the ingredients OUTSIDE the house and stand the tree trunk in the solution. The tree should stand outdoors but out of the wind, perhaps in the garage or on the porch, for 2 days.
  • When you bring the tree inside, remove the tree from the pail and save the solution for filling the tree stand. A fresh tree may soak up a quart or more of water per day. Avoid the tiny stands that hold only a cup or two of water. Refill the stand with solution or water frequently so that it is always full enough to cover the base of the trunk.
  • Avoid standing the tree in front of large glass surfaces, by heating vents or fireplaces that expose it to the sun and heat, leading to rapid moisture loss. Expect a fresh tree to use one-half to two gallons of water the first day it's brought inside. A fresh tree will continue to use water, but at a reduced rate throughout the holiday season.
